AUG 16: Relic Crypt

Coming from the southern door in the AUG 13 area, the party enters this (10 yards long by 20 yards wide) area. It is divided into two general sections by a lowered portcullis (standard stats, from north to south) 10 yards west of the northern door entrance. The eastern section features metal spikes on the south and east walls, making collisions into them extra painful (add +2 to the damage roll and it is also impaling). The western section is behind the portcullis, a very imposing cast iron gate decorated with emblems (the symbolic of a religious order), the section is dedicated to an ornate crypt and reliquary. The gilded reliquary in the form of a mock-church diorama, which holds relics of a Saint, is displayed here. The interior is decorated like a formal salon, with murals painted by a famous artist. A large stone coffin is besides the reliquary, the lid is very hard to move (it weighs 300 lbs.) and contains the mummified corpse of a saint.

Anyone inspecting the lowered portcullis will spot an inscription, written in the Angelic Language and featuring an etching of a bird. Anyone with Holiness or Power Investiture (Holy) can roll Per + their Talent to detect some divine magic active on the portcullis. A successful roll of Theology-3 skill or being capable of reading Angelic lets the examiner learn the portcullis has been divinely enchanted to raise and lower to the sound of the bird depicted in the etching. Successfully rolling Mimicry (Bird Calls) will activate the magical lock and raise the portcullis for access.

There’s pressure plates on the floor (Per-based Traps-4 to detect, DX-based Traps-7 or Poison-7 to disarm, avoid the plates with DX-5 or Light Walk) around the coffin and the reliquary. If the pressure plates are stepped on, sprayers on the ceiling will pump in demon’s brew poison (2d injury per second spent in the affected area, HT roll to halve injury) over a 4-yard-area for 5 seconds every time a pressure plate is triggered (the trap has 5 shots in it, stealing the poison via a DX-based Poison or Hazardous Materials roll at -7 yields one dose of demon’s brew per remaining shot).

One of the relics on display in the western section is a rare artefact, The Amulet of The Healer (see DF Magic Items page 22). Another relic found here is an ornate clerical spellbook, it’s written in the Angelic Language, it weighs 18 lbs, it’s worth $20500, it gives +2 reaction bonuses from potential buyers. The spellbook teaches the following Clerical spells; Armor, Aura, Bravery, Cleansing, Detect Magic, Final Rest, Lend Energy, Lend Vitality, Purify Water, Sense Evil, Sense Spirit, Share Energy, Shield, Stop Bleeding, Test Food, Warmth, Watchdog, Create Water, Light Jet, Relieve Sickness, Resist Disease, Restore Memory, Seeker, Summon Spirit, Turn Spirit, Turn Zombie, Affect Spirits, Astral Vision, Breathe Water, Command Spirit, Dispel Possession, Flaming Weapon, Relieve Paralysis, See Secrets, Silver Tongue, Sunbolt, Wisdom, Gift of Tongues, Vigil, Earthquake and Sanctuary.

The saint’s coffin contains grave goods next to the skeleton; one of them is an divinely enchanted Interposing (+2 Block) Glowing (light equal to torch) Medium Shield (DB 2, $28060, 15 lbs.) still clutched in the desiccated right hand.

At the south wall of the eastern section, there’s a low passage (requires crawling, 1-yard-wide, no doors) going 10 yards south to another area.
